A Facebook user Abdus Shahid Laskar wrote, “Garbage removal by municipality should be done before dawn…It should not be done during daylight or busy hours.” Another user, Rupak Das wrote, “Why not u make the footpath free from the encroachment of the business houses from Capital point to Rangirkhari via Shillongpatty? A user, Satyajit Das wrote, “Road condition in between National Highway & Medical is horrible… especially in front of Heartcare & near Shivalik Park…there is no road at all…only potholes…cost of repairing these two places won’t be costlier than patient’s lives…politicians won’t do anything before election…”

A Facebook user, Cheng Khomba put forward the following suggestions to make Silchar clean and devoid of traffic jam: “(1) Roadside illegal vendors who were evicted are operational again. So roadside vendors occupying footpaths should be removed for good especially from Rangirkhari point to Sadarghat Bridge point. (2) All Hotels & shops should be directed to keep dustbins in front of their establishments. (3) Still many shops are using Polythene bags! This should be stopped. Carry bags made from soft polypropylene which resemble a cloth are also non-biodegradable and should also be banned and only paper and jute bags should be allowed.”

Rafye Mazumder suggested “to move all the vegetable vendors from PWD road, such as, near National Highway, Hospital Road (near Alia Madrasa), Jail Road, Tarapur- towards over bridge & finally the famous traffic  zone Fatak Bazar (New Market).” Santanu Sutradhar wrote, “Madam the road leading to medical college is the most affected due to illegal parking of vehicles in front of some private hospitals and diagnostic centres which till date has not been addressed…. Moreover, the cruiser stand in front of link road and flour mill are the cause of continuous traffic jam.”

Another Facebook user Siddhartha Goswami wrote, “Ensure major roads free from E-Rickshaws, assign dedicated parking zones scientifically, install large garbage bins all across the town and ensure regular clearance of them by SMB garbage trucks, Improve major drains for sewage and storm water clearance, clear the footpaths from encroachment, CCTV installation for safety and security.”

Some other suggestions provided by the netizens include: Public awareness at big scale is necessary to make aware the people of Silchar the importance of cleanliness, if necessary fine should be impose on them, Garbage cleaning time by Municipality need to be maintained….it should be early morning before 7-00 AM & not during office hours, to adopt immediate measures on illegal parking and those dumping construction materials on main roads which creates heavy traffic jam and accidents etc.

These and many other suggestions were given by the netizens on Facebook in response to the post given by the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar. It’s now the turn for the people of Silchar to wait and watch how these suggestions are implemented by the district administration so that the citizens are offered a better and safe civic life.
