Onions from Egypt to be imported to Assam: Food and Civil Supplies Minister

December 4: The heat of onion was felt on Wednesday in the Assam Legislative Assembly as the opposition parties protested against the skyrocketing price rise of onions in the state. Congress MLA Ajanta Neog alleged that unscrupulous syndicates were operating in the state, which resulted in a price rise of onion and the state government has no control on it.

In his response, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury said, “During Congress regime, onion was sold at Rs 80 in 2013″. He further informed the House that in order to meet the present crisis, onions will now be imported from Egypt.” Dissatisfied with his reply, Congress legislators protested against the price rise of onions and walked out of the House.

It needs mention here that Onion is now selling at Rs 90 to 100 in the retail markets of Assam. As per reports, onions will be imported from Egypt to Mumbai and from Mumbai it will come to Assam. The price of the onions till it reaches Assam will be at Rs. 55 per kg. A commodity expert opined that the prices of onions are expected to come down only after January 2020.
