MP & MLA of Silchar went across water logged streets in Ward No 9 & 10, assures to find lasting solution
Illegal encroachment of khals a major problem, says MP Dr Rajdeep Roy
May 26: Though the water level of River Barak at Annapurna Ghat has gone down the danger level, yet flood water continue to persist in many areas of Silchar town. As a result, the inhabitants of these areas are suffering a lot. Areas such as Public School Road (Adi Shib Bari Lane), Bilpar, Radhamadhab Road, Kathal Road, some parts of Vivekananda Road are still flooded. On Thursday, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy along with MLA Dipayan Chakraborty visited the waterlogged roads and lanes under Municipal Ward No 9 and 10.
There they also took stock of the drains and found that these were all chocked due to dumping of garbage. Both the legislators interacted with the local people who were water logged since more than a week. They discussed on how to drain out the floodwater as well as on reaching a permanent solution to the recurring issue.
Speaking during the occasion, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty said, “We have used pumps to drain out water from Itkhola & Malugram area. The water was released in the river. Similarly, at Chandicharan Road, the accumulated water was drained off at Rangirkhal. People of Ward No 9 & 10 may feel that we are not doing anything to mitigate your sufferings, then it’s not correct. Actually, Rangirkhal flowing through this area is full with water and huge garbage and sand that it brought along during the flood. At this moment, it;s useless to use pump and drain out accumulated water from your area as this will lead to further complexities. We are here to do a proper survey of the area and then find a solution. Do rest your trust on us.”
Expressing his views, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy said, “Even in the past, after a spell of rain, water used to get accumulated. There were no proper drainage system. Moreover, we too are to be blamed. The khals which were supposed to carry out the water from town areas are all full. These khals are now encroached. We ave been saying this since long, but exactly such encroachments could not be evicted. We usually hold the govt officials for this. But we need to understand that these officials are working round the clock during the current flood. We have many amongst us who have opened their business establishments over govt land, encroached khals and opens shops. Even some have encroached by extending the boundary walls of their houses. Our actions have led to man-made calamity. We don’t have any outlet. We all seek your cooperation and together will have to find a lasting solution to this problem.”
MP Dr Rajdeep Roy Visited the Flood affected areas of Kanakpur and took the stock of the situation. Dr Roy also instructed the Flood control executive engineer and Forest department to clear the trees which is causing obstacle in flood water movement.
