Cooperative Week : awareness meet at Women’s College Silchar  

way2barak, November 16 : As a part of the 71st All India Cooperative Week celebrations, the Office of the District Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Cachar in Association with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) organised an awareness event cum speech competition at the Women’s College Silchar on Saturday.

More than 10 student participants of the college took part in the competitive event and delivered speeches on the impact of cooperative societies for the empowerment of women, and Role of Cooperative Societies in building rural economy.

Dr Santanu Das, the Principal of the college hailed the initiative taken by the office of the District Deputy Registrar for selecting Women’s College to be the venue for such an important and crucial event which would certainly help the students to know about the role and need for being part of cooperative societies for attaining the goals of development. He informed that the college had registered CSC Women’s College, Silchar Co-operative Society Limited a year ago and so far 300 students have enrolled into the society and approximately Rs 1 lakh capital has been raised by the society so far.

Rabishankar Likmabam the District Development Manager for NABARD addressed the students in an interesting and playful manner with questions on the various aspects of cooperative societies and also distributing prizes among the students for their correct and spontaneous response.

Himangshu Prakash Das, the District Fishery Development Officer informed that while there are only a handful of fishery cooperative societies, there is a need for more awareness for people to be brought into the fold of the societies in the coming days.

Later, Dr Nasir Uddin Ahmed, in his address lucidly explained the purpose of cooperative society and its importance in the development of economy. While the need for cooperative societies is more in the rural areas, it is a much-needed facility in the urban areas as well, Dr Ahmed said.

The winners of the speech competition were awarded with attractive prizes at the end of the event.
