Conflict between labourers & management at Kumbhirgram Tea

২৫ অক্টোবরঃ বেশ কিছুদিন ধরেই কাছাড় জেলায় কুম্ভীরগ্রাম চা বাগানের শ্রমিকদের মধ্যে ক্ষোভ পুঞ্জীভূত হচ্ছিল। বৃহস্পতিবার রাতে তার বিস্ফোরণ ঘটে। সন্ধ্যা ৬টার পরও মহিলাদের কাজে আটকে রাখলে  সমবেত প্রতিবাদ ধ্বনিত হয়। পুরুষ-মহিলা শ্রমিক মিলিয়ে বাগানের অফিসে গিয়ে বড়বাবু রামদাস সিংহের ওপর চড়াও হন। কাজের সময়সীমা নিয়ে উত্তপ্ত কথাবার্তার মধ্যে বোনাস, রেশন ইত্যাদি নিয়ে অসন্তুষ্টির কথাও উঠে আসে। উভয়পক্ষে অনেক সময় তর্ক-বিতর্ক চলে।

এরই মধ্যে একদল শ্রমিক রামদাসবাবুর কোয়ার্টারে ঢুকে পড়েন। লণ্ডভণ্ড করে দেওয়া হয় তাঁর ঘরের বিভিন্ন সামগ্রী। শ্রমিকদের উগ্রমূর্তি দেখে ম্যানেজার গা-ঢাকা দেন। খবর পেয়ে পুলিশের পদস্থ কর্তারা ছুটে যান।সবার সঙ্গে কথা বলে সিদ্ধান্ত হয়, শুক্রবার শ্রম কমিশনারের অফিসে ত্রিপাক্ষিক বৈঠক হবে।

There was discontent among the labourers of Kumbhirgram Tea Estate of Cachar since a long period of time. On Thursday night, the long suppressed anger erupted in the form of violence. When the female labourers were forcefully compelled to work after 6 PM, unanimous protest rocked the tea estate. All went together and gheraoed the head clerk Ramdas Singh inside the office of the garden. While discussing about the working hours, other issues like bonus, ration etc also cropped up. Alteration of words between them went on for quite some time.

Meanwhile, a few labourers entered in to the quarter of Ramdas Singh and turned all things inside into sixes and sevens. Sensing trouble, the Manager of the garden escaped. On being informed, police officials reached the spot. After having deliberation with all, it was decided that a tripartite meeting will be held in the office of the Labour Commissioner to solve this problem.
