way2barak, Nov.29: Ahead of the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the  foundation stone for a ‘road widening & heavy guard wall project to protect both sides of Rangirkhal channel’ in Silchar town. The ₹42.06-cr project funded by Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, Govt of Assam will rejuvenate the 17-km channel, which carries a huge volume of rain & storm water, and mitigate urban floods to a great extent.

Also present during the foundation laying ceremony were Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty among others.

After the recent devastating flood in Silchar in the month of June 2022, the administration took serious steps of making the Rangirkhal encroachment- free. Many illegal buildings constructed over the drain were also demolished recently.

Rangirkhal is one of the most important channels in Silchar. It originates from ‘Mahisha Beel’ in the eastern part of Silchar town located near river Barak. It then flow towards eastern direction across Silchar town carrying major storm water and finally discharges into river Ghagra. The total lengh of the channel is 17,000 metres. By rejuvenating the channel, the urban flood can be mitigated to a large extent.
