Celebrating International Internet Day; some interesting facts
Oct. 29: The International Internet Day is celebrated globally on October 29 every year. International Internet Day commemorate a momentous day in the history of telecommunications and technology. In 1969, on this day first electronic message which was transmitted from one computer to another. This day gives us an opportunity to honour the inventors of the internet.
Today, according to Hosting Clues, on an average an internet user is online for 6.5 hours a day. With over 560 million users, India is the second largest online market. Of the 7.8 billion people in the world, around 4.5 billion (58%) have access to the internet. Asis has the majority of internet users in the world with 50.3 % of its total population having access to the internet. On an average, an internet user is online for 6.5 hours per day.
Further, Hosting Clues revealed that 4.18 billion users access the internet from the mobile. When it comes to speed, it needs mention that South Koreans have the fastest mobile internet speed at 52.4 Mbps. Users spend 90% of mobile time on mobile apps. Google Play Store has the largest app collection at 2,570,000.
Symbolics.com is the first ever registered domain on the internet. It was registered in 1985. At present, there are 362.3 million registered domain names. China has the highest number of registered domains. Further, there are 145.4 million ‘.com’ domains, making it the most popular top-level domain (TLD).
When it comes to web search, 92.07% of all search engine activity is on Google search. Every second, there are over 40,000 search queries on Google. Around 93% of all web traffic, is from search engine. By the end of 2020, 50% of all web searches would be voice based.
Over 3.8 billion users have an active social media account. People spend around 2 hours 24 minutes on average on social media or messaging platforms. The most popular social media and messaging are Facebook (2.5 billion users) and YouTube (2 billion users). Everyday around 1 billion stories are shared on Facebook.
As regards e-commerce, over 2,5 billion people shop online. 47% of all global retail sales are made on the online market. 28% of all online sales took place from a mobile device in Q1 of 2019. E-commerce is growing at an average of around 23% every year.Social media ads are the most popular form of online advertising, followed by display ads and paid search marketing.
The other side of the picture is that every 39 seconds, there is a hacker attack; 43% of these are targeted at small businesses. In 2018, the total cost of cyber crime committed worldwide was $1 trillion. The average cost of a data breach will exceed over $150 million in 2020. By 2021, around $6 trillion is expected to be invested in cyber-security.
