Cachar Congress joins in nationwide protest held on Friday against fuel price hike
June 11: Congress leaders and party workers on Friday held symbolic protests at petrol pumps in several parts of the country, demanding a complete rollback of fuel price hike. In Cachar district too, the party members held protests at the block level in front of the petrol pumps raising slogans against the Modi-led BJP government and the Assam government.
Congress General Secretary Venugopal said, “The government should stop imposing excise duty on petrol and diesel. It should come under the purview of Goods and Services Tax. We demand a complete rollback of fuel price hike.” Party leaders said protests are being held at petrol pumps across the county by local units in compliance with COVID-19 protocols.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had earlier hit out at the Centre over the rise in petrol prices and said the waves of tax collection epidemic are continuously coming. Petrol and diesel prices were raised again on Wednesday by 19 paise per litre each in Delhi, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers. The latest hike has taken petrol to an all-time high of ₹95.56 a litre while diesel is now priced at ₹86.47 in the national capital. Petrol prices have crossed the Rs 100 per litre mark in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan and Ladakh.
