Braving hostile weather condition, Assam University observes Bhasha Sahid Divas in a befitting way
May 20: Assam University was supposed to observe Shahid Divas on 19 May in an elaborate way. A detailed programme was chalked out to observe the day by the “Bhasha Sahid Divas Celebration Committee,” which was formed for this purpose. The Coordinator of the committee was Prof. Dipendu Das. Meanwhile, due to torrential rainfall, the flood situation in the valley became very grim. Deputy Commissioner, Cachar ordered closure of all educational institutions for 48 hours and also imposed restrictions on plying of light vehicles.
In pursuance of the letter of the Deputy Commissioner cum Chairperson District Disaster Management Authority, Cachar on 18 May, 2022, Registrar of the varsity declared that Assam University and its affiliated colleges across all the districts within the jurisdiction of Assam University shall remain closed till 20 May, 2022. However, it was decided that the programme of the University on the occasion of Shahid Divas on 19 May, 2022 will be curtailed due to constraints imposed by natural calamity.
As such, on the occasion of Shahid Divas, only floral tribute was offered in the morning on 19 May at the altar of the martyr’s column of Assam University. Vice Chancellor Prof Rajive Mohan Pant, Registrar Dr PK Nath, Coordinator of “Bhasha Sahid Divas Celebration Committee.” Prof. Dipendu Das along with other teaching and non-teaching staff offered floral tribute at the permanent martyr’s column near the main gate of the varsity. However, due to hostile weather, the other activities supposed to be held at Bipin Chandra Pal Auditorium from 11.30 AM on that day were deferred.
