Biometric locked: Assam govt will ask Supreme Court to provide Aadhar to 26 Lakh people

March 24: A meeting with the representatives of All Assam Students Union (AASU) at Assam Administrative College in Khanapara was attended by Ministers Pijush Hazarika, Atul Bora & Yogen Mohan on 21 March. On the instructions of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma, Ministers on Thursday again met with the leaders of 27 other organizations of Assam.

The ministers discussed with the organizations about the fact that around 26 lakh people of Assam were deprived of various government services & facilities as they did not have Aadhar card. Aadhar enrollment for these 26 lakh people of Assam was not possible due to bio-metric data lock. Apart from this, the issue of submission of affidavit by the state government for revision of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the Supreme Court of the country was also discussed today.

After threadbare discussion, it was decided that appeal be made in the apex court to allow Aadhar enrollment to these 26 lakh people whose biometric was put on hold. It was further decided that those whose names would not feature in the final NRC (as & when it is published), then at that time their Aadhar cards will be cancelled.
