Barak Valley registers 569 Covid-19 +ve cases on Thursday; 3 deaths at SMCH

Active cases 3,278 in Barak Valley

May 20: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in the three districts of Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Thursday, the number of fresh cases in the valley was somewhat less. A total of 717 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Wednesday, Barak Valley registered 717 positive cases. At present, there are 3,278 active Covid cases in Barak Valley.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Thursday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 333 positive cases   (It was 465 on Wednesday)
  • Karimganj: 134 positive cases (It was 120 on Wednesday)
  • Hailakandi: 102 positive cases (It was 132 on Wednesday)

A total of 333 new cases of COVID-19 was reported on Wednesday in Cachar. As per the updated data, a total of 3,655 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) were done, out of which, 278 persons were found positive, whereas 55 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. This was informed by Suman Choudhury, District Media Expert on Thursday night. With this, the total number of Covid cases in 2021 reached 5,776 in 2021, whereas during the year, 3,924 patients were discharged. With this, the number of active cases in Cachar has reached 1,808.

Death of Covid-19 patients continued unabated in Barak Valley. Thursday witnessed demise of 03 more Covid-19 positive patients at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). This was informed by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH. Their detailed reports were forwarded to the State Death Audit Board as per the protocol. All the three deceased are from Cachar district.

The deceased were identified as: Rupak Paul (36) from Masimpur, Cachar, Krishna Kanu (64) from Derby in Cachar and Jahan Ahmed Laskar (46) from Masimpur, Cachar.

Hailakandi registered 102 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday. Of the 102 positive cases detected on Wednesday, 91have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and 11 found positive in RT-PCR test. The district has altogether 772 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 1,714 RAT tests and 35 RT-PCR tests were done. 106 patients were discharged during the day. It needs mention here that 132 persons were found positive in Hailakandi on Wednesday. With this, the district tally of Covid cases has now reached 4,957.

As of now, in the 18 plus category, 7,822 persons have received the 1st dose of the vaccine. In the 45 plus category, 47,837 have received the 1st dose of the vaccine, whereas, 15,202 have been administered the 2nd dose in Hailakandi district.

Karimganj registered highest spike of 134 fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 6,344. Of the 134 active cases detected on Thursday, 132 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and two under RT-PCR. It needs mention that on Wednesday, 120 persons were detected as Covid positive in Karimganj district.

The district has currently 698 active COVID-19 cases while 115 patients have been discharged from hospitals and home isolation on Thursday. 3,185 swab samples were collected on Thursday. Altogether 2,60,421 samples have been tested so far. 16 persons with high risk contacts traced and tested on Thursday. There are five containment zones in Karimganj town.

On Thursday, out of 1,02,684 tests, 6,573 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 3,53,574. The positivity rate in the state is 6.40 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 1,084 positive cases during the day. Further, on Thursday, 74 more persons lost their lives in the state due to COVID-19. With this, the death toll in the state reached 2,507. On Thursday, 3,071 patients were discharged in Assam. With this, a total of 2,97,902 patients got cured and were subsequently discharged.

Further, during the day, 74 patients died in Assam due to COVID-19. Out of the 74 deceased, 10 are from Kamrup Metro; 09 from Barpeta; 08 from Kamrup Rural; 07 each from Darrang & Goalpara; 05 from Nagaon; 04 from Tinsukia; 04 each from Darrang & Sivasagar; 02 each from Bongaigaon, Cachar, Golaghat, Lakhimpur & Sonitpur; 01 each from Baksha, Biswanath, Chirang, Hojai, Kokhrajhar, Morigaon, Nalbari & Udalguri. The death tally of the state now stands at 2,507.
