Barak Valley registers 278 positive cases on Thursday

August 27: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Thursday, the number of fresh cases again increased in the valley. A total of 278 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Wednesday, Barak Valley registered 228 positive cases. In the last 24 hours, the Valley witnessed 4 more deaths at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), out of which 2 are from Cachar and 2 from Karimganj.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Thursday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 134 positive cases   (It was 136 on Wednesday)
  • Karimganj: 34 positive cases (It was 63 on  Wednesday)
  • Hailakandi: 110 positive cases (It was 29 on  Wednesday)

A total of 134 persons from Cachar district were tested COVID-19 positive on Thursday. A total of 739 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) were done during the day, out of which, 93 were detected positive. The rest 41 were found positive in 5 slots of RT-PCR Test. Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of Silchar Medical College & Hospital informed that 4 more patients have died at SMCH in the last 24 hours, out of which, two are from Cachar district, while the others are from Karimganj. At present, 19 patients are critical at SMCH.

A total of 7 persons from Cachar Cancer Hospital were detected as COVID-19 positive on Thursday. 3 persons of Cachar Cancer Hospital were found positive as per the test results of the 4th slot on Thursday. One of them hails from Khowai in Tripura, the other is from Tukubari Basti, while the 3rd one is from Meherpur. In the 5th slot of RT-PCR Test Results, 4 more persons from Cachar Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (CCHRC) were tested positive. They are a 15-year-old boy, 45-year-old female, 25-year-old female and 32-year-old female. All are patients at CCHRC.

The two deceased at SMCH in the last 24 hours are Ekdur Rahman Laskar (55) from Katigorah in Cachar district was admitted at SMCH on 22 August. He, however, breathed his last at 9.20 PM on 26 August. He died due to sudden cardiac arrest. His death was certified as Non-Covid death by the State Death Audit Board. Dipa Rabidas (02 months) from Motinagar in Cachar was admitted at SMCH on 24 August at 9.30 PM. However, the baby lost its life at 11.15 PM on 25 August.

On Thursday, State Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet informed that 110 persons were tested COVID-19 positive in Hailakandi district. However, as per press release issued by DIPRO, Hailakandi, 49 fresh COVID-19 positive cases were reported from the district on Thursday, taking the total tally to 2,069. Health authorities here disclosed that of the 49 positive cases, 14 have been detected under the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) while 35 under RT-PCR.

Altogether 1,077 cases have been found positive under RAT with over 50 per cent without travel history. 1,626 persons on being cured have been discharged from hospitals.The number of active cases is 428. Six COVID-19 positive patients have breathed their last at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. Nine deaths at SMC&H have been declared as ‘non-COVID’ by the State level Death Audit Board. 115 COVID-19 afflicted persons are under home isolation. Of the 19,478 swab samples taken, 15,454 have tested negative. Swab results of 2,152 persons are awaited.

Karimganj district registered 34 new COVID-19 positive cases on Thursday. Out of 34 positive cases, 22 were detected in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), whereas, 12 were found positive in RT-PCR Test. Further, two persons from Karimganj died at SMCH in the last 24 hours. They are Bijayendra Deb (72) from Subhas Nagar in Karimganj was admitted at SMCH at 12.40 PM on 19 August. He died at 8.20 PM on 26 August. He was suffering from heart ailments. His death was certified as Non-Covid death by the State Death Audit Board. The other is Dilip Majumdar (64) from Karimganj was also admitted at SMCH at 5 PM on 26 August. He died at 9.30 AM on 27 August. His death was certified as Non-Covid death by the State Death Audit Board. 

Apart from the valley, a total of 2036 persons tested positive in Assam on Thursday, thereby taking the state tally to 98,807. As of now, there are 19,219 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, 2,345 patients were also discharged from across the state during the day. With this, a total of 79, 307 persons were discharged in Assam. Moreover, during the day, 04 persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, thereby taking the death tally to 278.

Registering 75,000 COVID-19 cases for the first time in a span of 24 hours, India’s virus tally sprinted past 33 lakh on Thursday, while the number of recoveries crossed the 25 lakh mark, according to the Union Health Ministry data. The number of active cases in the country are 7,25,991, while 25,23,771 patients have been discharged. The country also recorded 1,023 fatalities in the last 24 hours which pushed the death toll to 60,472, according to health ministry data. The recovery rate has now reached 76.24 percent. India is the country with the third-highest coronavirus caseload in the world after the United States and Brazil.
