Barak Valley registers 205 positive cases on Tuesday

August 5: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Wednesday, the number of fresh cases again was somewhat less in the valley in comparison to the previous day. A total of 205 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley. It needs mention here that on Tuesday, Barak Valley registered 258 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Wednesday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 93 positive cases (It was 141 on Tuesday)
  • Karimganj: 69 positive cases (It was 56 on Tuesday)
  • Hailakandi: 43 positive cases (It was 61 on Tuesday)

With 93 new cases of COVID-19 positive on Wednesday, Cachar recorded a total of 2166 cases of coronavirus as of now. A large number of positive cases on Wednesday were detected through contact tracing. Apart from this, cases on account of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) were also also found during the day. On Thursday, 20 positive cases were detected through 3 slots of RT-PCR Test whereas 73 were found positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).

Another 6 persons died in Assam on Wednesday due to COVID-19. Out of the six, one person is from Cachar district. The deceased was identified as 56-years-old Kanu Paul. As per sources in Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH), the deceased Kanu Paul is from Dholai in Cachar and took admission at SMCH with severe COVID-19 symptoms including T2DM and HTN on 28 July, 2020. As his condition became critical, so he was shifted to COVID ICU of SMCH on 29 July. He was on ventilator with maximum support from 29 July. His condition was critical throughout. Finally, he breathed his last on 4 August, 2020 at around 4 PM. The death tally of Cachar has gone upto 6.

Suman Choudhury, District Media Expert said that the health department has now increased the number of rapid tests. Apart from the Urban Screening Centre at Trunk Road, another Covid Screening Centre will now be started at Teachers’ Training College (TT College), Hailakandi Road, Silchar. The new screening centre will start functioning from Thursday. Anyone can go there for doing Rapid Antigen Test (RAT). The centre will remain open from 11 AM to 3 PM. The results of Rapid Test will be declared within 15 minutes.

On Wednesday, 43 fresh COVID-19 positive cases have been reported from Hailakandi district, taking the total tally to 1141.Health authorities here disclosed that of the 43 positive cases detected on Wednesday, 39 cases have been detected under the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT). A total of 306 cases have been found positive under RAT so far with majority of them without travel history. 21 persons on being cured have been discharged from hospitals on Wednesday, taking the total number of persons released to 867.The number of active cases in the district is currently 266.

Karimganj district registered a biggest spike of  69 COVID-19 positive cases on Wednesday. This takes the district tally to 955. Apart from this, 24 persons were discharged in Karimganj. Till now, 533 patients were cured and discharged.

Apart from the valley, a total of 2248 persons tested positive in Assam on Wednesday, thereby taking the state tally to 50,445. As of now, there are 14,429 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, 1471 patients were also discharged from across the state during the day. With this, a total of 35,892 persons were discharged in Assam. Moreover, during the day, 6 persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, thereby taking the death tally to 121.

India’s COVID-19 tally reached 19,08,254 today, with 52,779 cases being reported in a day. Recoveries rose to 12,82,215 including 51,706 in past 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data. There are 5,86,244 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country presently while the recovery rate among COVID-19 patients has gone up to 66.31%. This is the seventh consecutive day that COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 50,000. 857 patients succumbed to coronavirus infection in past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 39,795.
