Assam University voices protest against assault on JNU students

January 07: Criticism is on the rise as against the incident of violence that took place in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) , New Delhi. Along with many other higher educational institutes, students of Assam University, Silchar too registered a democratic protest against the hooliganism exhibited in JNU on 5 January by a gang of goons.

On Tuesday late evening, many students of Assam University assembled near the main gate and registered a democratic protest against the physical assault launched upon their counterpart in JNU. With candle in their hands, the students of the varsity sat for protest demonstration near the main gate.

The students displayed various placards wherein they sharply criticised the incident of vandalism in one of the premier educational institution of higher education in the country. While speaking to way2barak, Aritra Dhar, General Secretary of Assam University Students’ Union (AUSU), who also participated in the demonstration said, “We have assembled here to express solidarity to the students who were injured in JNU. I strongly condemn such act of vandalism against the student and at the same time demand the immediate arrest of the culprits by the law enforcing authority.”

The students were seen to display a number of placards wherein slogans such as, “Stop attack on students”, “Dissent is the safety valve of democracy”, “Save Students”, “Are we safe?”, “Stop violence on dissent”, “We are with JNU” etc. were written.

Violence broke out at JNU on 5 January, 2020 as a gang of masked people armed with sticks and rods attacked students, teachers and damaged property on the campus. Atleast 28 people including Students’ Union President of JNU Aishe Ghosh were injured in the chaos which went on unabated for almost 2 long hours. Two wardens of the Sabarmati Hostel inside the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi submitted their resignations on 6 January on moral grounds. They expressed the view that they tried but could not provide security to the students.
