দক্ষিণ মেরু অভিযানে নির্বাচিত আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রাক্তনী

ওয়ে টু বরাক, ২৫ আগস্ট : দক্ষিণ মেরু–অ্যান্টার্কটিকায় আসন্ন বৈজ্ঞানিক অভিযানের জন্য নির্বাচিত হলেন আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পদার্থবিদ্যার প্রাক্তন গবেষিকা ড. বেগম আবিদা চৌধুরী। গবেষণা ও অভিযাত্রার এক অনন্য সংযোগে তাঁর এই সাফল্য শুধু বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় নয়, সমগ্র উত্তর-পূর্বের জন্যও এক অসাধারণ গর্বের মুহূর্ত।

শিলচর ওয়াটার ওয়ার্কস রোডের বেগম আবিদা চৌধুরী আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে ২০২০ সালে অধ্যাপক অত্রি দেশমুখ্যের তত্ত্বাবধানে জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন নিয়ে পিএইচডি সম্পন্ন করেন। দীর্ঘ গবেষণার অভিজ্ঞতা তাঁকে এখন বিশ্বমানের বৈজ্ঞানিক অভিযানে পৌঁছে দিয়েছে। আসন্ন অভিযানে তিনি বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে প্রতিকূল আবহাওয়ায় জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন সংক্রান্ত বিষয়ে গবেষণা করবেন।

অভিযানের আগে তিনি কঠোর প্রশিক্ষণ সম্পন্ন করেন উত্তরাখণ্ডের আউলিতে অবস্থিত ইন্দো-তিব্বত সীমান্ত পুলিশের পর্বতারোহণ ও স্কিইং স্কুলে। গত ১১ আগস্ট থেকে ২২ আগস্ট পর্যন্ত এই প্রশিক্ষণ তাঁকে শূন্যের নিচে নেমে যাওয়া তাপমাত্রা, প্রবল ঝড়ো হাওয়া ও বিচ্ছিন্নতার মতো কঠিন পরিস্থিতিতে মানিয়ে নেওয়ার অভিজ্ঞতা দিয়েছে।

ড. বেগম আবিদা চৌধুরীর অন্তর্ভুক্তি ভারতের মেরু গবেষণায় নতুন মাত্রা যোগ করবে বলে মনে করা হচ্ছে। জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন ও পরিবেশগত ব্যবস্থার বৈশ্বিক প্রভাব বোঝার ক্ষেত্রে তাঁর গবেষণা বিশেষ তাৎপর্য বহন করবে।

আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক রাজীব মোহন পন্থ ড. আবিদাকে অভিনন্দন জানিয়ে বলেছেন, এটি আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের জন্য এক অসাধারণ গর্বের মুহূর্ত। আবিদার এই সাফল্য প্রমাণ করছে আমাদের গবেষকরা আজ বিশ্ব বৈজ্ঞানিক মঞ্চে স্বীকৃতি পাচ্ছেন। ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের কাছেও এ এক অনুপ্রেরণা। তাঁর এই সাফল্য উত্তর-পূর্বের তরুণ বিজ্ঞানীদের বিশ্বমানের বৈজ্ঞানিক উদ্যোগে নিজেদের সক্ষমতা প্রমাণের এক মাইলফলক।

Way2barak, August 25 : Alumna of Assam University Dr. Begum Abida Choudhury has been selected to join an upcoming scientific expedition to Antarctica. This achievement marks a proud moment for the university and the entire region of Northeast India.

Begum Abida Choudhury completed her PhD in Physics from Assam University under the supervision of Prof. Atri Deshmukhya. Her years of academic research have now opened the door to an international platform where she will contribute to cutting-edge scientific studies in one of the most challenging environments on Earth.

Before earning her place on the Antarctic mission, she successfully underwent a rigorous acclimatisation programme at the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Mountaineering and Skiing School in Auli, Uttarakhand. The training, conducted from August 11 to 22, tested participants’ endurance and resilience under extreme conditions that mimic Antarctica’s reality—bitterly cold temperatures, high winds, and extended isolation.

Her inclusion in the expedition is expected to add significant value to its scientific objectives. With her research background, Choudhury will strengthen India’s contribution to polar studies, which play a crucial role in understanding climate change, environmental systems, and their global impact.

The Vice Chancellor of Assam University, Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant, extended his warm congratulations to Abida, praising her achievement as “a moment of immense pride for Assam University and for the entire Northeast.” He noted that her selection reflects the growing recognition of scholars from the region on global scientific platforms and serves as an inspiration for future researchers. He has also described this achievement as a milestone, underscoring that it highlights the capability and determination of young scientists from Northeast India to make their mark in world-class scientific endeavours.
