Assam to implement new law to make couple disclose religion & income before marriage
Nov. 30: Assam government is working on a new marriage law that will make it mandatory for both the bride and the groom to disclose their religion and source of income, profession, permanent address among other things atleast one month before the marriage, failing which legal action would be taken.
Giving further details, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said, “One will have to disclose not only religion, but earning source. Complete family details, education etc. Many a times even in same religion marriage we have found that the girl later finds that the husband is doing some wrong business.” The minister further added that his government’s law was not entirely like the ones in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. “Assam’s law is a not against ‘love jihad’. It would be inclusive of all religions and would empower our sisters by bringing transparency,” he said.
Himanta Biswa Sarma said that said that one should not enter into a married life if there is no transparency between the husband and wife. He added that it is important to disclose – what is my religion, what I do, how much do I earn. It will basically empower women, said the minister.
