Assam government launches its flagship scheme ‘Orunodoi’
Dec. 1: ‘Orunodoi’, Assam’s biggest social welfare scheme was formally launched Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in presence of State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on 1 December, 2020 at Numali Jalah Parade Ground, Amingaon in Guwahati. It is an ambitious & momentous step towards socio-economic empowerment. A total of 18 lakh plus families in Assam will get Rs 830 per month in their bank accounts under the ‘Orunodoi’ scheme. Launching the scheme, CM Sonowal said, “The scheme has been dedicated to the women for empowering the women.”
Taking to his twitter handle, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “A scheme worth Rs 2800 crore, it will help marginalised households of Assam for purchasing essential commodities like nutritional items & medicines. It is the largest ever Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme.

The minister further stated that in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Sabka Vikas, the programme would support Assam’s poor families by subsidies in:
- Medicines worth Rs 400
- 4 kg pulses worth Rs 200
- Sugar worth Rs 80
- Essential vegetables & fruits worth Rs 150
“Orunodoi is designed keeping in mind that women are primary caretakers of households & therefore the benefit are best transferred to their accounts. The women need to ensure that they have a bank account under Jan Dhan Yojana,” added Himanta Biswa Sarma. It shall cover about 20 lakh households with approximately 90 lakh of population in all 33 districts comprising 2277 Gram Panchayats & 100 urban areas. In order to assist Deputy Commissioners in programme implementation, 504 Orunodoi Sahayaks have been engaged.
