Assam Education Minister proposes 20% increase in seats & 2 shifts in state colleges

Aug 4: The Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) has declared the HSLC/AHM Examination 2021 results on July 30. A record 93.10% of students passed this examination this year. Assam Higher Secondary Education Council ( AHSEC) declared HS Result 2021 on July 31, 2021. This year, the passing percentage of Arts streams is 98.93%. Whereas, Science and Commerce stream have achieved a pass percentage of 99.06% and 99.57%, respectively.

This high pass percentage this year in HSLC exams has led to panic in the minds of several students and guardians who are afraid that there might not be enough seats in different HS Schools and Colleges where they could seek admission in HS 1st year. Though earlier, state Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu stated that there are enough seats in schools and colleges to accommodate all students who have qualified HSLC/HS this year.

However, on Wednesday, speaking with the journalists, Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu stated that he has proposed to raise 20 percent seat capacity in colleges of Assam so that those who have qualified HSLC and HS can get accommodation for further studies. He said that as the pass percentage is quite high this year, so the problem can be addressed by enhancing 20 percent intake capacity by the colleges. He further suggested the colleges to initiate two academic shifts- morning and evening to increase opportunities for aspirants to get enrolled.

The Education Minister further stated that admission in HS 1st year will be done this year through a common single web portal in order to maintain uniformity. He also stated that the students can enroll themselves for admission through this portal by providing their Roll Number. The students while enrolling themselves in this common admission portal can opt for a maximum of 5 colleges. The schools/ colleges then will prepare a selection list and update it in this portal.

The Higher Secondary Education Council of Assam has announced that the students who are dissatisfied with their latest results can reappear for exams. A new assessment based marksheet will be given to the students appearing the HS examinations once again. The students will have to submit their current marksheets if they are to re-appear the HS examination.
