Assam COVID-19: Biggest single-day spike of 285 +ve cases on Thursday, total crosses 2000 mark

June 4: Thursday witnessed the biggest single-day spike of coronavirus positive cases in the state of Assam. A total of 285  COVID-19 cases were reported from Assam on 04 June. As people stranded outside the state started to pour in, the number of coronavirus cases has been on the rise. From one positive case in 31 March, it has now gone upto 2115 on 4 June.

The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in the state was 1830 on 3 June. But on 4 June, the numbers went on increasing almost the whole day, crossed the 2000-mark and reached 2115. Out of this, there are 1649 active cases in the state.  All eyes seemed to be on the twitter page of State Health Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Here is the complete sequence of how the positive cases were reported on 4 June.

  1. 4 June, 11.40 AM: 47 new cases: 33 Hojai, 6 Dhemaji, 4 Bongaigaon, 3 Barpeta, 1 Baksa.
  2. 4 June, 06.30 PM: 111 new cases: 46 Hojai, 28 Udalguri, 11 Kamrup, 10 Nagaon, 5 Morigaon, 3 Nalbari, 3 Goalpara, 2 Golaghat, 2 Jorhat, 1 Dhubri.
  3. 4 June, 10.30 PM: 85 new cases: 21 Barpeta, 21 Tinsukia, 14 Dima Hasao, 8 Dhemaji, 8 Udalguri, 5 Kamrup 4 Lakhimpur, 3 Kamrup Rural, 1 Baksa.
  4. 4 June, 11.15 PM: 42 new cases: 38 Dhubri, 4 Darrang.

Amidst this enveloping darkness, there were ofcourse some rays of hope on Thursday as the total number of patients cured and discharged also went up to 46 in the state. Till now, a total of 459 patients were discharged in Assam. Let’s have a quick glance of the break-up of 46 patients who were discharged on 4 June:

  • 02 discharged from Dhemaji District Hospital
  • 15 discharged from Sonapur District Hospital
  • 14 discharged from MMCH
  • 05 discharged from FAAMCH
  • 04 discharged from SMCH
  • 03 discharged from Golaghat Civil Hospital
  • 01 discharged from GMCH
  • 02 discharged from Dhemaji Civil Hospital

Meanwhile, there are multiple reports of people blatantly flouting quarantine norms and exhibiting unruly behaviour in institutional quarantine facilities. Such unruly attitude has become a challenge for the government in its attempt to contain the further spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the state. Assam Health Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma gave a strict warning for all such violators. “We will register non-bailable cases against those violating quarantine norms. It will be considered as an attempt to murder,” said the minister.
