Alleged physical assault of patient party at SMCH, DC deputes magistrate to enquire

June 7: An alleged incident of physical assault upon a patient party at Silchar Medical College & Hospital on Saturday night has raised several questions. An FIR in this connection was also lodged on Sunday at Ghungoor Police Out Post. Principal of SMCH has, however, refuted the allegations as baseless and rather said that it is the patient party which created ruckus inside the hospital. Meanwhile, Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner, Cachar has deputed a Magistrate to look into the matter.

Following the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner, Eva Das, Assistant Commissioner visited SMCH on Monday and had a detailed discussion with the Principal of the college and other doctors. The Executive Magistrate also visited the bereaved family and assured that proper investigation into the matter will be done. She also expressed heartfelt condolence for the demise of the baby.

A 57-days-old baby was undergoing treatment in the ICU at SMCH. The father of the baby Sarif Ahmed alleged that the junior doctors showed great negligence in treating their baby and gave forced discharge to the baby. As per the FIR, the oxygen connection in the ICU was not working properly. The father of the baby called the on duty junior doctor to resolve the issue. At this, the doctor became angry and ordered the man to get out of the ICU. The father said that who will monitor the stitch of oxygen connection if he goes away. The doctor was not prepared to listen to him. He then informed his brothers who immediately came to SMCH from Sonabarighat Part-1. A quarrel started between the patient party and the doctors. Meanwhile, it was alleged that many other junior doctors came there and physically assaulted the patient party. Sarif Ahmed was even made to kneel down. The baby was forcibly released. However, they then rushed to admit the baby at SM Dev Civil Hospital. But the baby passed away on the way to Silchar Civil Hospital.

Alleged injury marks exhibited by patient party

However, Principal of Silchar Medical College refuted the allegations as baseless. He informed that the 57-day-old baby was kept in oxygen support. But the patient party time and again entered the ICU. It becomes very chaotic if too many attendants enter the ICU. When this was protested by the on duty doctors and nurses, they became furious. They called some of their relatives and all of them started hurling abuses on the care givers. Finally, they forcibly took away the baby from the ICU.

Principal SMCH denies claim of doctors beating patient party

On Sunday, the father of the deceased baby lodged an FIR at Ghungoor Police Out Post. While interacting with the media at the police station, the father of the baby Sarif Ahmed and his brothers showed multiple injuries on their body. They alleged that the junior doctors inflicted injury by beating them with sticks etc. Police has launched an investigation into this matter. Meanwhile, this incident in which a baby lost its life has given rise to anger and grief among the people.
