After Omicron variant detected in Assam, CM to chair high level meeting on 6 Jan to decide future course of action

Jan. 5: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will chair a high level meeting at Guwahati on Thursday to review the Covid situation in the state and determine the future course of action. Informing this, state Health Minister Keshab Mahanta on Wednesday informed, “As there has been a surge in COVID19 cases in Assam from January 1 and two people have so far been detected with the Omicron Variant, a high level meeting will be chaired by Hon’ble CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tomorrow to review the situation and decide on the next course of action.”

The health minister further stated, “The two infected with the Omicron variant have been identified as Rohan Das, a resident of Sonapur, who was detected in Shillong, Meghalaya, and Mohammad Mahmud Hussain, a resident of Hojai, who travelled from Saudi Arabia was detected in our state.”

Earlier during the day, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma while speaking with the media said that though the Covid cases are rising alarmingly in the country, but there will be no lockdown in the state.

On Wednesday, out of 34,314 tests, 591 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 6,22,488. The positivity rate in the state is 1.72 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 279 positive cases during the day. Further, on Wednesday, 04 died in the state due to COVID-19. At present, there are 1,979 active cases in the state.
