ACS officer Nandita Konwar sentenced to 4 years imprisonment in bribery case

April 8: Assam Civil Service (ACS) Officer Nandita Konwar asked for a bribe of Rs.20,000 for disbursing a bill related to construction work in 2015. She was then caught red handed while accepting the bribe. On Thursday, a special court in Guwahati sentenced the officer to 4 years imprisonment. It needs mention here that Nandita Konwar is the daughter of Devanand Konwar, former Governor of Tripura, Bihar and West Bengal.

Taking to his tweeter handle, Special DGP, Assam, GP Singh wrote, “Spl V&AC Court Ghty in Case No.10/2017 convicted Smti Nandita Konwar,ACS, then serving as PD, DRDA, Kamrup(M) Punishment: u/s 7 PC Act-3 years & fine of Rs.12,000/- u/s 13(2) PC Act-4 years & fine of Rs 20000 Both sentences to run concurrently.”

In 2015, ACS officer Nandita Konwar was posted as the project director of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) of Kamrup (Metro) district. It was then that she allegedly had demanded 12 per cent of the bill (which amounts to Rs.12,000) amount of Rs 1.2 lakh for constructing a road under the MPLAD fund of of then Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakravarty. She allegedly took the money from Purna Chetry, adviser to Durga Sarovar Unnayan Samity, an NGO. After six years, the court pronounced the verdict of punishment on 8 April, 2021.
