পাকিস্তানের ২২তম প্রধানমন্ত্রী হিসেবে শপথ নিলেন ইমরান খান। সাধারণ নির্বাচনের ফল প্রকাশের তিন সপ্তাহ পরে গতকাল পাকিস্তান পার্লামেন্টের নিম্নকক্ষে প্রধানমন্ত্রী পদের সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ ভোটে নির্বাচিত হলেন তিনি। আজ সে দেশের রাষ্ট্রপতি ভবনে নতুন প্রধানমন্ত্রীকে শপথবাক্য পাঠ করান পাকিস্তানের রাষ্ট্রপতি মামনুন হোসেন।

এদিকে গতকাল অনুষ্ঠিত নির্বাচনে মোট ১৭৬টি ভোট পান ইমরান। প্রধানমন্ত্রী নির্বাচিত হতে তার প্রয়োজন ছিল ১৭২টি ভোট। তার প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী পাকিস্তান মুসলিম লিগ নওয়াজের প্রার্থী শাহবাজ শরিফ পান ৯৬টি ভোট। তবে ভোটদানে বিলাওয়াল ভুট্টোর পাকিস্তান পিপলস পার্টি বিরত থাকে। এদিন ইমরান শপথগ্রহণ অনুষ্ঠানে গিয়েছেন তাঁর পছন্দের কালো শেরওয়ানি পরে। ইমরানের তৃতীয় স্ত্রী বুশরা বিবিও ছিলেন এই শপথগ্রহণ অনুষ্ঠানে। এ বছরের শুরুতে বিয়ের পর এটাই তাদের প্রথম একসঙ্গে জনসমক্ষে আসা। এদিকে প্রধানমন্ত্রী নির্বাচিত হওয়ার পর গতকাল পাকিস্তানের সংসদে প্রথম ভাষণে ইমরান বলেছেন, পাকিস্তানকে যারা লুট করছে, তিনি তাদের বিরুদ্ধে উপযুক্ত ব্যবস্থা নেবেন। তিনি বলেন, আমি আজ দেশের সামনে প্রতিজ্ঞাবদ্ধ হচ্ছি যে, দেশ যে পরিবর্তন অন্বেষণ করছে আমি তা নিয়ে আসবো।

অক্সফোর্ডের গ্র্যাজুয়েট ইমরান খান ১৯৯৬ সালে তাঁর দল তারিখ ই ইনসাফ প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন, যার অর্থ ন্যায়-এর জন্য আন্দোলন। ১৯৯২ সালের বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেটে চ্যাম্পিয়ন পাকিস্তান দলের অধিনায়ক ইমরান খান তাঁর শপথ গ্রহণ অনুষ্ঠানে বেশ কয়েকজন নামি ক্রিকেটারকেও আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়েছিলেন। এদের মধ্যে উপস্থিত ছিলেন প্রাক্তন ভারতীয় ব্যাটসম্যান নভজ্যোৎ সিং সিধুও।

Imran Khan was sworn in as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan on Saturday. Imran Khan, 65, won a simple majority from lawmakers yesterday in a confidence vote. Khan was administered oath by President Mamnoon Hussain at the President’s House in the capital.

Imran was sworn-in three weeks after the general elections took place on 25 July. He outvoted opposition and Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) prime ministerial candidate Shahbaz Sharif in the PM’s election. The Oxford-educated Khan after retiring from the world of cricket launched Tehreek-e-Insaf, 22 years ago (which means the movement for justice) in 1996. It was not a smooth sailing and had to struggle before he became the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

A tearful Mr Khan, clad in a traditional black sherwani, smiled as he stumbled over some of the words of the oath. Mr Khan had run a populist campaign promising to change the lives of Pakistanis and come down hard on corruption. “Those people who have looted the country, I promise that they will be brought to justice,” he said.

For Khan’s third wife, Bushra Bibi — formerly known as Bushra Maneka, it was her first public appearance since their wedding earlier this year, and she appeared escorted by tight security.

The former cricketer had invited three of his contemporary players from India, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev to his oath ceremony. Only Mr. Sidhu made it for the event.
