Silchar Municipal Corporation election on October 3, counting on October 6

way2barak, September 2: –The State Election Commission Assam has announced the schedule for the much awaited election to the 42 ward Silchar Municipal Corporation, with polling scheduled for October 3 and counting of votes on October 6.
The election notification issued on Wednesday, marks the beginning of the formal electoral process for the Corporation which was constituted with 42 wards by the Governor of Assam . The reservation of wards for Scheduled Caste and women candidates had earlier been notified by the Government.
The ward wise Photo Electoral Rolls for the election to the Silchar Municipal Corporation were prepared and published by the State Election Commission, Assam on July 15, 2026, in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 8 of the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022, read with Rule 5 of the Assam Municipal Corporation Election Rules, 2022.
As per the notification, the notice of election issued on September 2 while September 11 has been fixed as the last date for filing nominations. The scrutiny of nomination papers and publication of the list of validly nominated candidates will take place on September 14. Candidates seeking to withdraw their candidature will have time up to September 17, on which date the final list of contesting candidates will also be published.
Polling across the 42 wards will be held on October 3, 2026, from 7.30 am to 4 pm. The Commission has also kept October 5 as the date for a fresh poll, if required, with polling hours again fixed from 7.30 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will begin at 8 am on October 6 and will continue until the entire counting process is completed.
The State Election Commission has called upon the electors of all 42 wards of the Silchar Municipal Corporation to elect the Councillors of the Corporation in accordance with the notified schedule. The election is being conducted in exercise of the powers vested in the Commission under Article 243ZA of the Constitution of India, read with Section 372(1) of the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022 and Rule 3 of the Assam Municipal Corporation Election Rules, 2022.
With the publication of the election notification, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect throughout the Silchar Municipal Corporation area. Political parties, candidates and other stakeholders will accordingly be required to adhere to the provisions of the Model Code during the entire election process.
The Silchar Municipal Corporation election will be the electoral exercise through which voters across the 42 wards will choose their representatives to the Corporation. The results to be declared after counting on October 6 will determine the elected Councillors of the Corporation.
