The Dengue Crisis: Dos and Don’ts

way2barak, Nov.11: A total of 642 people tested positive of dengue till November 9 in Assam, out of which the most affected district is Karbi Anglong with 543 cases alone. Meanwhile, a student of MBBS third year of Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH) has been detected with Dengue-like symptoms. Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH informed that the blood sample of the student has been sent to examination. He also informed that the student has recently returned from Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, 3 cases of Dengue were also detected from Karimganj district. Out of them, 2 are from Karbi Anglong. It is speculated that these two persons carried the germs of Dengue from Karbi Anglong. Meanwhile, the government is keeping a keen observation on the situation in Barak Valley.

Two died of dengue at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), informed Superintendent Dr. Abhijeet Sarma. Dr. Sarma further informed that the two patients were also suffering from liver disease. “One was admitted on November 7 while the other patient was admitted in the hospital on November 10. A total of 18 patients were admitted in the hospital who tested positive of dengue,” Dr. Sarma added.

Dengue is Preventable. People should look out for the symptoms to prevent dengue and protect themselves and their family from Dengue.

Dos: 

  • Use mosquito repellents and nets.
  • Install screens on your doors and windows.
  • Wear full-sleeve clothes to avoid mosquito bites.
  • Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day and carry water.
  • Do see a doctor if you show any symptoms of dengue.

Don’ts: 

  • Do not let water collect in open spaces and surroundings.
  • Do not self-medicate if you have symptoms of dengue like fever and body ache.
  • Avoid consuming paracetamol and aspirin-based medicines without medical supervision.
  • Avoid giving steroids or antibiotics to dengue patients.
  • Avoid platelet transfusion unless there is an active bleed or the platelet count is less than 10,000.

Treatment of Dengue is available in all government hospitals. Laboratory facilities for testing Dengue is available free of cost in all district hospitals and medical colleges. Dengue is preventable.
