Gujarat’s Morbi cable bridge collapse: more than 90 bodies recovered, several missing

way2barak, Oct.30: The death toll in the cable bridge collapse in Gujarat’s Morbi has risen to 91, reports said quoting hospital officials. Many were still feared missing with rescue operations ongoing. Multiple teams of the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) were dispatched to the site of the incident with more on their way.

The century-old suspension bridge on the Machchhu river in Morbi town of Gujarat, about 240 km from Gandhinagar, collapsed on Sunday evening. The bridge had re-opened just four days ago, after being closed for about seven months for repair work. The incident occurred at about 6:30 pm, when dozens of people were walking on the bridge, a major tourist attraction of Morbi.

“More than 90 bodies recovered, of which more are of children, women & elderly. Rest have been rescued; NDRF rescue op underway. We’re taking this matter very seriously, it’s very saddening,” said Mohanbhai Kalyanji Kundariya, BJP MP from Rajkot. He further said “Machinery present at the spot to pump out the water so that we can figure out the bodies underneath, as there’s a lot of silt. I believe the bridge got overloaded and that led to the incident. Many teams engaged in rescue, CM to arrive shortly.” Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi said more than 150 people were on the bridge.
