A day after CM Mamata met Himanta & Dhankhar, TMC announces to abstain from voting in VP election

July 21: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) headed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will abstain from voting in the upcoming Vice Presidential poll, party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said on Thursday.

He said that his party will not support NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was the Governor of West Bengal. The Opposition has fielded Margaret Alva in the election. Abhishek Banaerjee further said that TMC was not kept in the loop regarding the decision. As such, the party has decided to abstain from voting in Vice Presidential election.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and her Assam counterpart Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Raj Bhavan in Darjeeling on Wednesday and described it as a “courtesy meeting”, where nothing political was discussed. Some political experts have opined that this meeting among the trio have resulted in TMC abstaining from participating in Vice Presidential election.
