9 ft long King Cobra dies being trapped in fishing net; Assam Univ keeps stuffed specimen

July 18: A 9 feet long female King Cobra weighing 4 kgs (world’s largest Poisonous snake) got trapped in fishing net in a basti area near Allenpur, Dwarbond in Cachar district.

Informing this, Prof Parthankar Choudhury, former Head, Department of Ecology & Environmental Science, Assam University & a renowned environmentalist said, “Our snake rescue team reached the spot, but by then, the snake succumbed to death. It was brought to our department by Tuhin Chakraborty, and then, stuffing was done. Tuhin Chakraborty & Biswajit Singh assisted me in this process.”

The stuffed specimen is now kept in the Department of Ecology & Environmental Science, Assam University & will remain as it is for another 30 to 40 years, informed Prof. Choudhury.
