5 Rohingya along with other local children flee from observation home in Silchar

July 9: When Silchar was reeling under unprecedented flood, water also entered inside the premises of Juvenile Observation Home at Meherpur, Silchar. Taking advantage of the situation, some children lodged there fled away. As per sources, at least five children belonging to Rohingya refugees were among those who eloped from the Home.

Though they are reported to have been missing since July 1 by breaking a portion of the wall of the Observation Home, but the incident came to light on Friday. Police is investigating into the incident and are trying to trace the whereabouts of those who escaped from the Home.

Silchar police detained 26 Rohingyas including eight women, six males and 12 children on 29 May. The group of Rohingyas had reached Guwahati from Delhi by train on May 28 and was traveling via roadways to Silchar when apprehended. Of the 26 Rohingyas apprehended, the police had kept the minors at the observation home at Meherpur, Silchar and the others at the Silchar Central Jail.
