Rajdeep Roy included in 14-member Management Team formed by BJP for election of President of India

June 17: The term of office of Ram Nath Kovind, President of India, is ending on 24 July, 2022. As per Article 62 of the Constitution of India, an election to fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of the term of office of the outgoing President is required to be completed before the expiration of the term.

The election for the next President of India will be held on July 18. The counting of votes will take place on July 21 and the new president will take oath on July 25. Notification for the presidential election was issued on June 15 and the last day of filing a nomination will be June 29. The papers will be scrutinised on June 30. The last day to withdraw the nomination papers will be July 2.

In this connection, the BJP has formed a Management Team for smooth conduct of the election of the President of India. The said Management team of BJP comprises of 14 members. The Convenor of this Management team is Gajendra Singh Sekhawat. MP Silchar Dr Rajdeep Roy in his capacity of State Vice President of BJP Assam has been included in this 14-member Management Team. Taking to his social media handle, Dr RajdeepRoy wrote, “I thank my leaders for including me in the Management Team for the President’s Election.”

Article 324 of the Constitution read with the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, and the Presidential and Vice – Presidential Elections Rules, 1974 vests the superintendence, direction and control of the conduct of election to the office of the President of India in the Election Commission of India.

President is elected through an electoral college system in which elected MPs and MLAs from states/UTs cast votes. While the value of votes of every MP is fixed, value of MLAs’ votes differ based on their states’ population. The votes are given on ballot paper in order of preferences for the candidates, least-voted of whom get eliminated one by one.

Eleven candidates filed their nominations on the first day of the upcoming presidential polls. Sources said the paper of one of them was rejected for want of proper documents. The candidates who filed nominations on Wednesday were from Delhi, Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. A nomination paper of a candidate for the election has to be made in the prescribed format and has to be subscribed by at least 50 electors as proposers and at least 50 electors as seconders. The security deposit for the election of Rs 15,000 should also be deposited.
