World blood donor day observed in Cachar
June 16:”World Blood Donor Day” which is observed every year through out the world on 14th June was observed at Silchar Medical College & Hospital here on Tuesday. A blood Donation drive was organised by Rotaract Club of Silchar Medical College & Hospital in association with National Medicos Organisation and Seva Bharati at Silchar Medical College Blood Centre where 28 persons donated blood. The blood donors comprised of students and budding doctors of Silchar Medical College & Hospital.
Later ,an event was also held at the auditorium of Silchar Medical College to felicitate the Voluntary Blood Donor Organisations and create awareness of the need for voluntary unpaid blood donation.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Abhijit Swami, Superintendent, Silchar Medical College & Hospital said that the day is observed on the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner who discovered the Blood group system and the campaign slogan for this year’s World Blood Donor Day is ” Donating Blood is An Act Of Solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”.
Earlier,in his inaugural speech, Principal of SMC&H Dr BK Bezbaruah highlighted on the need for committed, year-round voluntary unpaid blood donation, to maintain adequate supplies and achieve universal and timely access to safe blood transfusion and administered the Pledge of Voluntary Blood Donation to the attendees.
Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice- Principal, Silchar Medical College along with Principal and Superintendent felicitated executive magistrate Kishan Chorei and Abhijit Dey representing District Disaster Management Authority. In-charge, Blood Centre, SMC& H Dr Rajib Biswas also spoke on the importance of voluntary non-remunerative donation and thanked all the donors who had donated blood on the occasion.
It’s worth mentioning that in the month of April and May ,2022,169 patients from various departments of SMC&H were issued blood from blood centre at SMC&H when blood donors were not available for the replacement.
