After Silchar, Railway conducts eviction drive in Badarpur, 70+ structures dismantled

April 2: A few days ago, the Railway authorities carried on eviction drive at Tarapur area in Silchar where inspite of repeated appeal, the encroachments were not vacated by more than 100 families. On Saturday, a similar drive was carried on by the Railway department at Badarpur in Karimganj district of Assam. A total of 73 structures, which included houses and shops, constructed on the land possessed by the railway department was demolished using bulldozers.

Within a few hours, the unauthorised structures were demolished. However, the dwellers had their own tale to narrate. They alleged that several representations to the public representation for providing them alternate place to stay went on unheard. One of them also stated that they had been living in that place for the last 40 years. Without providing them any rehabilitation, the railway authorities have demolished their houses and left them at the mercy of nature.
