CRPCC urges PM Modi to fulfill promises he made in 2014

January 2: The largest democracy in the world is gearing up for the biggest political event in the first half of 2019. The Lok Sabha Elections, 2019 has led the country’s top psephologists to involve themselves in brainstorming sessions in various news channels. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up to reach the magic figure in the Lok Sabha for the second consecutive time and their trump card is ofcourse Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi has selected Ramnagar ( around 4 kms from Silchar) at the spot from where he will kick start the electoral campaign for his party.

However, things appear to be much different from 22 February, 2014 when PM Modi just on the eve of Lok Sabha Polls 2014 addressed a gathering at Ramnagar (Silchar). In his speech in 2014, he assured that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power, all the Detention Camps in the state will be closed. He further assured to solve the issue of ‘D-voters’. However, since then, though the BJP has came to power with a thumping majority, yet the issue of ‘D-voters’ has acquired a much wider dimension. Further, instead of doing away with the detention camps, more such camps are being set up the government. These were the allegations labelled by the members of Citizens Rights Protection Coordination Committee (CRPCC) during a protest demonstration held by them near the Khudiram Statue at Silchar on Wednesday just two days before the visit of PM Modi again at the same spot but at an interval of 5 years.

While speaking during the demonstration, they lamented on the ‘insensitive’ terms used like ‘termites’ and ‘intruders’ to describe the 40 lakh people whose names did not feature in the final draft of NRC published on 30 July 2018. CRPCC also brought out an Open Letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi wherein they have mentioned all these. They concluded the Open Letter by sighting their inability to welcome the Prime Minister on 4 January, 2019 for not fulfilling the promises made by him towards the linguistic minority of the state.

Present during the demonstration were prof. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Sarifujjuman laskar,Dr. Sourindra Kumar Bhattacharjee, Simanta Bhattacharjee, Partha Ranjan Chakraborty and others.
