9 new items including Gamosa of Assam gets GI Tag
way2barak, Dec.14: The Union government has awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to nine new items from various states. The items include Gamosa of Assam, Tandur Redgram of Telangana, Raktsey Karpo Apricot of Ladakh, Alibag White Onion of Maharashtra. With this, the total number of GI tags in India has risen to 432. This was announced by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. Recently, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH-India) organized a Geographical Indications Fair 2022 to promote the GI Tags in India. Products that are assigned a GI Tag are considered to be a “Invaluable treasures of Incredible India”. Karnataka is the state with the most number of GI tags products. Currently, it has 42 geographical indication tagged products in the country.
