Remembering folk singer Kalika Prasad Bhattacharjee on his 50th birth anniversary
Sept.11: Commemorating the 5Oth birth anniversary of renowned folk singer Kalika Prasad Bhattacharjee as Loko Songhoti Divas, the Office of Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone observed the day in a befitting manner on Friday. Floral tributes were paid at the portrait of the eminent artiste by the artistes and employees of DDIPR in the morning hours.
As part of the programme, selected songs of Bhattacharjee were relayed over the fixed loud speakers in the morning and evening hours. Artistes of the cultural wing of DDIPR rendered popular songs of the noted artiste as a mark of tribute. Retired artiste Nipu Sarma sang some songs of Bhattacharjee to the accompaniment of flute by artiste Souman Paul Choudhury.
Speaking on the occasion, retired staff artist of DDIPR cultural wing Dilip Sinha said, ” Late Kalika Prasad Bhattacharjee was an asset to our music industry, specially he took folk music of various regions like North Bengal and Bangladesh to new heights and gave a new dimension to it adding more colours to folk music and that, too, using indian folk instruments instead of western musical instruments, which make most of his creations more pleasurable to listen”.
It may be recalled that since 2017 the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Assam is observing his birthday as ‘Loko Songhoti Divas’.
