শিলচর শহর থেকে গোপালগঞ্জ হয়ে যাওয়া পুরনো লক্ষীপুর রোডটি সংস্কার না হওয়ায় অভিনব প্রতিবাদ করলেন এলাকার বাসিন্দারা। এই সড়কের ব্রহ্মপুত্র বোর্ডের কার্যালয়ের সামনে জমা জলে জাল ফেলে মাছ ধরতে লেগে গেলেন। শুধু এটুকুই নয়, প্রতিবাদের অঙ্গ হিসেবে রাজ্যের পূর্তমন্ত্রী হিমন্তবিশ্ব শর্মার কুশপুতুল তারা জমা জলে ভাসিয়ে দিয়েছেন। এই প্রতিবাদ কর্মসূচিতে রাজনৈতিক মতাদর্শের উর্ধ্বে উঠে এলাকার মানুষ সামিল হন।

আন্দোলনে অংশ নিয়ে বেরেঙ্গা গ্রাম পঞ্চায়েত সভাপতি আবুল কালাম আজাদ মজুমদার বলেন, এই এলাকাটি বরাবরই বৈষম্যের শিকার। সরকার বদল হয়েছে। কিন্তু রাস্তাটির কোনও পরিবর্তন হয়নি। পরিমল শুক্লবৈদ্য পূর্তমন্ত্রী থাকার  সময়ও রাস্তার ভাগ্য বদলায়নি। ক্ষুব্ধ জনতা পরে মাছ ধরার পোশাকেই চলে আসেন অফিস পাড়ায়। পূর্ত সড়ক দফতরের এগজিকিউটিভ ইঞ্জিনিয়ারের অফিসের পুরো প্রবেশপথ আটকে ধরনা শুরু করেন। সেই সময় তাঁরা অফিসে কর্মচারী সহ অন্যান্যদের চলাচলে বাধাদান করেন। এ

ই অবস্থা আড়াই ঘণ্টা চলার পরে অ্যাসিস্ট্যান্ট এগজিকিউটিভ ইঞ্জিনিয়ার ধরনাস্থলে গিয়ে দুইদিন সময় চেয়ে নেন। তিনি আশ্বস্ত করেন, দুইদিনে সমস্ত জটিলতা কাটিয়ে রাস্তাটিকে চলাচলের উপযোগী করে দেওয়া হবে।তাঁর আশ্বাসের ভিত্তিতেই আন্দোলনকারীরা রাস্তা ছেড়ে দিয়ে এ দিনের মতো আন্দোলন প্রত্যাহার করে নেন।

September 4: The old Lakhipur Road, which passes through Gopal Ganj is lying in a dilapidated condition since the last few years. As a result, the residents of the locality resorted to a unique way of protest. They started to catch fish in the huge pot holes on that road near the office of the Brahmaputra Board. They further floated an effigy of the PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the stagnant water on the road.

Residents cutting across party lines took part in this movement. Abul Kalam Azad Mazumdar, President of Berenga G.P. while participating in the protest movement told that that particular stretch of road is always a target of discrimination. Though there has been a change of guards both at the central and state levels, yet none has endeavoured to repair that road. The fate of the road remained unchanged even when Parimal Suklabaidya was the PWD Minister. Later on, the agitated crowd putting on the dress of fishermen came near the office of the Deputy Commissioner.

There they gheraoed the entrance of the office of the Executive Engineer of PWD and started raising slogans. As a result, the movement of the staff of the PWD office was disturbed. After around 2 hours, the Executive Engineer came to the spot and sought a time period of 2 days. He assured the agitating public that within two days necessary steps will be taken to repair the road. On being assured, the agitation was withdrawn for the day.
