May 4: Here are the major events that occurred on 4 May….

  • 4 May, 1675: King Charles II of England commissions the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. The observatory was built on the prime meridian. The mean solar time at this location is the basis for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
  • 4 May, 1783: Tipu Sultan was enthroned as the ruler of Mysore after the death of Haider Ali in a simple ceremony at Bednur. He continued the Second Anglo- Mysore Wa. He defeated many English Generals like Brithwhite & Col. Bailey. Tipu Sultan signed the treaty at Mangalore on 11th March 1784 A.D. which was known as the Mangalore treaty.

  • 4 May, 1799: Tipu Sultan is killed in a battle against 5,000 British soldiers who stormed and razed his capital, Seringapatanam.
  • 4 May, 1814: King Ferdinand VII of Spain signs the Decree of the 4th of May, returning Spain to absolutism
  • 4 May, 1849: Jyotirindranath Tagore, Bengali litterateur and poet, was born.
  • 4 May, 1854: The first stamp was officially issued from Calcutta where the first post office was established.
  • 4 May, 1904: The United States takes over the construction of the Panama Canal
  • 4 May, 1916: Zail Singh, the seventh President of India, was born
  • 4 May, 1923: Mrinal Sen, famous film director, was born.
  • 4 May, 1932: Mustafa Kemal Pasja becomes Turkish president

  • 4 May, 1953: Ernest Hemingway wins the Pulitzer Prize. The American author was awarded the prestigious accolade for his novel The Old Man and the Sea. The story about a fisherman and his battle with a large marlin also earned him the Nobel Prize for Literature.
  • 4 May, 1959: Nehru rejects proposal that India and Pakistan resolve their differences and set up a common alliance against Communist China.
  • 4 May, 1959: The Grammy is presented for the first time. It is one of the most prestigious awards in the music industry. Winners of the first edition included Ella Fitzgerald, Henry Mancini, and Frank Sinatra.
  • 4 May, 1979: Margaret Thatcher becomes the first woman to be elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
  • 4 May, 1990: Supreme Court directs Central Government to set up a Tribunal to resolve Cauvery water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

 

  • 4 May, 1993: Santosh Yadav became the first Indian woman to conquer the Everest twice.
  • 4 May, 1994: Fourth developmental launch of ASLV. 113 kg Stretched Rohini Satellite Series (SROSS-C2) was launched by fourth developmental flight of ASLV-D4 from Sriharikota. This carried two scientific payload, a Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) experiment and a Retarding Potential Analyser (RPA). It is still in service.
  • 4 May, 1994: Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat sign a peace accord to ensure Palestinian self-rule in Gaza and Jericho. Together with Shimon Peres, the two leaders received the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. A year later, Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist.
  • 4 May, 1995: The fourth ASLV-D4 blasts off from Sriharikota, successfully placing the SROSS-C2 satellite in orbit.
  • 4 May, 2006: Naushad Ali, Indian composer and producer, died
