Amritsar train tragedy, 61 dead, railways call it trespassing

১৯ অক্টোবরঃ অমৃতসরে ট্রেন দুর্ঘটনায় ৬১ জনের মৃত্যু হয়েছে। আহত হয়েছেন অন্তত ৫০জন।

দশেরা উপলক্ষে কয়েকশো মানুষ জোড়া ফটক এলাকায় জড়ো হয়েছিলেন। ২০ ফুট দীর্ঘ রাবণের প্রতিকৃতি তৈরিই ছিল। আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে তা জ্বালিয়ে দেওয়া শুধু সময়ের অপেক্ষায়। দর্শনার্থীরা তখন  একটু পিছিয়ে গিয়ে রেলওয়ে ট্র্যাকে দাঁড়ান। কারণ জ্বলন্ত রাবণের দেহাংশ খসে পড়ে কোনও অঘটন ঘটতে পারে। এ ছাড়া, ট্র্যাক থেকেই রাবণ-পোড়ার দৃশ্য ভালো দেখাচ্ছিল। আচমকা নজরে পড়ে ওই পথেই ট্রেন ছুটে আসছে। ও দিকে, ততক্ষণে  রাবণের প্রতিকৃতিতে আগুন লাগানো হয়ে গিয়েছে। বিকট শব্দে বাজি-পটকা বেজে চলেছে। কে কী করবেন, বুঝে ওঠার আগেই ৬১ জনকে পিষে দেয় জলন্ধর থেকে আসা ট্রেনটি। আহত হয়েছেন আরও অন্তত ৫১জন। আহত-নিহতদের মধ্যে রয়েছে প্রচুর শিশুও। রাবণের দেহে জুড়ে দেওয়া পটকার শব্দে ট্রেনটির শব্দও সেভাবে শোনা যায়নি। মাত্র ১০-১৫ সেকেন্ডের মধ্যে ঘটে যায় পুরো ঘটনা। আনন্দ-উল্লাস মুহূর্তে বিষাদে পরিণত হয়। আত্মীয়-পরিজনদের কান্নায় বাতাস ভারি হয়ে ওঠে।

রেল সূত্রে জানা গিয়েছে, দুর্ঘটনার কারণ অনুসন্ধান করা হচ্ছে। জলন্ধর-অমৃতসর রুটে আপাতত ট্রেন চলাচল বন্ধ রাখা হয়েছে। প্রাথমিক তদন্তে রেল কর্তৃপক্ষ জানতে পেরেছেন, জোড়া ফটকে দশেরার জন্য আয়োজকরা কোনও অনুমতিই নেননি। নভজ্যোত সিং সিধু এই রাবণ-পোড়ার উদ্যোক্তা ছিলেন। তাঁর স্ত্রী ছিলেন প্রধান অতিথি। ঘটনার পরে তিনি বলেন, প্রতি বছরই এখানে রাবপোড়া হয়।

মুখ্যমন্ত্রী পি বিজয়ন এই ঘটনায় গভীর শোক প্রকাশ করেন।

October 19: In a tragic incident, atleast 61 people celebrating Dussehra were killed and many injured after a train ran over hundreds standing on a railway track in Amritsar on Friday evening. An eyewitness said, “A train travelling at a fast speed ran over several people during Dussehra celebrations, in Choura Bazar near Amritsar.” The accident took place at Dhobi Ghat near Jaura Phatak at 6:45 pm. The train was travelling from Jalandhar to Amritsar.

It was learnt that the effigy of Ravana was being burnt less than 100 metres from the railway tracks.  A person present there said “Ravan effigy was being burnt 70-80 m from the gate, when the effigy fell, people present there ran towards the railway track, at the time a train was passing and level crossing there was shut.”

Reportedly, stunned spectators didn’t realize what happened till the 74643 Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU flashed past them. Those who rushed to the adjacent track to save themselves were reportedly run over by 13006 Amritsar-Howrah Express.

Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has said he is rushing to Amritsar to personally supervise relief and rescue efforts. He has asked all government and private hospitals to stay open. “My government will give Rs. 5 lakh to kin of each deceased and free treatment to injured in government and private hospitals. District authorities have been mobilised on war footing,” he tweeted. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh have also promised all possible assistance.

The accident took a political twist with Punjab minister Navjot Sidhu’s wife facing allegations of leaving the site soon after the incident. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who was the chief guest at the event, later talked to media at a hospital where injured were taken and said her priority was to ensure they receive proper treatment.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said the Railways is conducting immediate relief and rescue operations. Mr Goyal, who is in the US, also said he is returning to India.All major parties including the BJP, the Congress and the AAP said they have asked their respective local party workers to help in relief and rescue operation.
