March 31: Assam’s first coronavirus positive case was reported on Tuesday evening. In a tweet, Assam’s Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “A 52-year-old person has been found positive for #Coronavirua and is Assam’s first #Covid19 patient. He is undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College. His condition is stable.” The man came by train from Delhi to Karimganj a few days ago. It was learnt that he went to Delhi for cancer treatment and business related issues. However, it is not yet clear whether he also attended the religious congregation at Nizamuddin. As per sources, he is a resident of Srigouri (Badarpur) in Karimganj district of Assam.

It was learnt that the person came from Delhi to Karimganj. Later on 16 March, he went to hatigaon and then came back to Karimganj on 18 March, when he developed symptoms of COVID-19. At that time, the man was at Badarpur. He then went to Sri Gouri hospital at Badarpur. From there, he was referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), where he was tested positive. Efforts are on by the government to trace the links from where the man got infected with coronavirus. This is the 3rd case in North East India after 2 cases reported from Manipur and Mizoram.

It was further learnt that his 2nd sample was sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, where it was detected COVID-19 positive. The man undergoing treatment at SMCH is learnt to be stable now. While speaking to news-persons on Tuesday evening, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “This matter was known to us yesterday evening, but for confirmation we sent the sample to NIV, Pune. Now, as per protocol we are trying to trace his travel history. I will inform the details tommorow. But I will urge upon all to obey the lockdown. I would appeal to the people not to panic, We are prepared to meet all impeding circumstances. I am at present at Lakhimpur to start a COVID-19 hospital.”

Unconfirmed sources informed that he came from Nizamuddin to Karimganj. That means somehow a Nizamuddin connection is there. Nizamuddin in New Delhi has now been regarded as a hot bed of corona infected persons. However, the source was reluctant to disclose more details as certain things are prohibited to be disclosed in case of COVID-19. The scenario will be much clear once the health minister officially divulges the details on Wednesday.
