‘Y’ category security given to 3 judges of Karnataka High Court who gave hijab verdict
March 20: In a landmark judgement on 15 March, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday ruled that wearing of hijab is not an essential religious practice under Islamic faith. Petitions filed by Muslim girls seeking permission to wear hijab in classroom were dismissed. However, following the verdict, three three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Aasthi, Justices Krishna Dixit and Khazi M Jaibunnisa were given life threats. A video of a person threatening to kill them surfaced online.
Following this, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said that “Y” category security will be provided to the three judges of the High Court who upheld the ban on hijab in educational institutions. Three persons have been booked in this connection.
In their verdict, the three-judge bench further stated that educational institutions have a right to prescribe uniforms and that this is a reasonable restriction to which students cannot object. “Students can’t object to uniform prescribed by educational institutions,” said the High Court. It further stated that all the petitions filed justifying wearing of Hijab in educational institutions are without any merit.
