‘World Meitei Convention 2020’ inaugurated in Cachar in presence of Chief Minister of Manipur

March 4: A two-day long “World Meitei Convention 2020” was formally inaugurated at Lamargram under Sonai constituency of Cachar district on Wednesday. The programme was jointly organised by Pan Meitei Convention and Assam Manipuri Progressive Front. The main objective of the convention was to promote all round development of Meitei community across the countries, especially India, Bangladesh and Mayanmar. The meeting was organised to promote unity and integrity by bringing consensus among Meitei community.

Former Union Minister Kabindra Purkaystha graced the occasion as distinguished guest and Deputy Commissioner, Cachar, Barnali Sharma also attended the function as a guest of honour. Other dignitaries who graced the occasion were K. Sarat Singh, Vice Chairman, Manipur Food Industries Corporation Limited, Advocate and social activist, Rina Devi, Professor Mutum Babatan Singh were also present in the function.

N. Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur graced the occasion as the chief guest while Deputy Speaker of Manipur Assembly, Rabindra singh attended the function as a special guest. Deputy commissioner, Cachar Barnali Sharma received N.Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur at the helipad near the venue of the convention. The programme began by lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. They all were felicitated on behalf of the Cachar district administration.

In her speech, Deputy Commissioner Barnali Sarma said, “It’s a privilege for me to welcome such an august gathering in Cachar district.” She upholded the rich culture and heritage of the Northeastern states and said that the region upholds an example of ‘unity & cohesion.’ She further thanked the organisers for conceptualization and its subsequent materialization in such a befitting manner.

In his speech, N. Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur thanked the organisers for coming up with such a wonderful arrangement and wished that the two-day long “World Meitei Convention 2020” would definitely witness a wide range of discussion encompassing topics from diverse fields. Expressing his views on the apprehensions in Assam as regards implementation of the CAA, the Manipur CM further opined that everyone in Assam will be “safe” if the Clause 6 under the ‘historic’ Assam Accord is implemented. He also said that the  Meiteis have become “indigenous” to the people of Assam and must be allowed to appear in the exams in their own language.

As per reports, approximately 5000 people belonging to Meitei community from different states and neighbouring country of  Myanmar also participated in the convention.
