Women’s College NSS unit spread message to quit tobacco, shun single-use plastic
March 31: As a part of the seven-day special camp, the students of Women’s College Silchar under the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit reached out to the dwellers of Kharilgram in Machughat under Cachar district which has been an adopted village of the unit and disseminated messages of quitting tobacco consumption and re-using clothes as bags to shun the habit of using single-use plastic.
“This was a special camp for us and we reached out to the people in Kharilgram village to tell them what the ill affects of consuming tobacco are. Also, we shared the process through which they can re-use the clothes at home as bags and thereby give up the habit of using single-use plastic and we were happy to see the enthusiasm among the dwellers who responded in the affirmative to the issues.,” the students said.
Dr Manoj Kumar Paul, who had interacted with the team of NSS volunteers on their return to college after the camp said that social responsibility is a part of our education and we must reach out to the people and give back to society.
Dr Sanghamitra Debnath, programme office NSS unit of the college said that because of COVID-19, there were no such activities taken for the past two years. However, the seven-day special camp for the students with the motto- “not me but you” was based on a two-fold agenda – to spread awareness on avoiding tobacco consumption and living healthy, avoiding single-use plastic and save nature. We all know that tobacco consumption is high across North East India and hence realizing our obligation towards society, we reached out to the people in the adopted village with the messages.
