যৌতুকের জন্য প্রায়ই বিবাদ বাঁধত স্বামী-স্ত্রীতে। শেষপর্যন্ত আগুন ধরিয়ে দেওয়া হল স্ত্রী সুমনা বেগম বড়ভুইয়ার দেহে। গত ১ অক্টোবরের ঘটনা। ৬ দিন মৃত্যুর সঙ্গে লড়াই করে শনিবার সকালে শেষনিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন হাইলাকান্দি জেলার টান্টু এলাকার গৃহবধূ  সুমনা। তাঁর বাবার বাড়ির পক্ষ থেকে স্বামী বদরুল ইসলাম বড়ভুইয়াকে অভিযুক্ত করে মামলা দায়ের করা হয়েছে। পুলিশ তাকে গ্রেফতার করে শনিবার আদালতে তোলে। পরে বিচারকের নির্দেশে ১৪ দিনের জন্য বিচারবিভাগীয় হেফাজতে পাঠানো হয়।

সুমনাকে গ্রামবাসীই প্রথমে লালা প্রাথমিক স্বাস্থ্যকেন্দ্রে এবং পরে শিলচর মেডিক্যাল কলেজে পাঠান। কিন্তু শেষপর্যন্ত বেঁচে ওঠেনি বলে তাঁরা বদরুলের বিরুদ্ধে প্রচণ্ড ক্ষোভ ব্যক্ত করেন। জেলে রেখে বদরুলের বিচার দ্রুত সম্পন্ন করার জোরালো আর্জি জানান তাঁরা।

October 6:Frequent arguments took place on the issue of dowry between the husband and the wife. Ultimately, the wife Sumana Begum Barbhuiya was set ablaze on 1 October. After fighting with death for six days, Sumana, a resident of Tantu area of Hailakandi district succumbed to her burns. A complaint was filed by her parents accusing her husband Badrul Islam Barbhuiya. Police has arrested Badrul on the basis of the complaint and produced him in the court on Saturday. He was later on sent to 14 days judicial custody.

After being set on fire, Sumana was taken by the villagers to the primary health care centre and then to Silchar Medical College. However, when she died, people of her locality expressed deep anger against her husband.Badrul. They demanded for a speedy trial of Badrul.
