In the meantime, officials have asked people to protect themselves by covering their faces with a wet cloth. In 1984, a chemical leak in a plant in the central city of Bhopal killed thousands of people, in what is acknowledged to be the world’s worst industrial disaster. More than 35 years later, victims say children are still being born with disabilities because of the effects of the spill.

Doctors at the King George Hospital informed that the gas is styrene. They said that it affects the brain and spine of the person who has come in contact with it. “Styrene chemical easily mixes with oxygen when it comes in the atmosphere. This results in increase in the carbon monoxide in the air. People feel suffocated as it affects on the lungs. Later, brain and spine get affected,” the doctors said. The officials were campaigning among the people around to wear wet masks for safety.
