Viral incidents of child kidnapping in social media is fake, asserts Karimganj Police
way2barak, Sept.16: Since the last few days, the social media users in Karimganj district of Assam has been witnessing a number of posts where incidents of suspected child kidnappers lifting children had become viral. Many such information (infact misinformation) were blindly shared by social media users. Facebook and Whatsapp are the two main platforms, where narration of such child kidnappers were shared by the netizens. Such unfounded claims led to a situation of panic in Karimganj district.
The netizens were found to share such incidents of child lifting without verifying the facts. The issue was blown out of proportion which ultimately led to the intervention of Karimganj Police. The claims of child kidnapping in the district were dismissed by the police as blatant rumours as no such incident(s) were reported in any police station of the district in the recent past. Karimganj Police gave a strict warning to the people not to spread such fake news. The cops even urged upon the public to think before sharing such information in social media.
Request all not to believe the rumours of suspected child kidnappers running loose. No complaint of kidnapping/attempted kidnapping by unknown miscreants have been reported in the recent past. Those spreading the fake news will be prosecuted.

Taking to their twitter handle, Karimganj Police on Thursday wrote, “Request everyone not to believe the rumours of suspected child kidnappers running loose in Karimganj. No complaint of any kidnapping/ attempted kidnapping by unknown miscreants have been reported in the recent past. Those spreading the fake news will be prosecuted. Think before you share!”
