Vedas & Upanishads adorn book shelves in a Mosque

মসজিদের গ্রন্থাগারে তাকে-তাকে সাজানো বই। ইসলামিক শিক্ষার নানা গ্রন্থের সঙ্গে রয়েছে পাঁচ খণ্ড বেদ, উপনিষদের অখণ্ড সংস্করণ। আছে অচিন্ত্য কুমার সেনগুপ্তের পরমপুরুষ শ্রীশ্রী রামকৃষ্ণ, নিতাই বসুর ভগিনী নিবেদিতা। দলাই লামা, বাবাসাহেব আম্বেদকরের জীবনীগ্রন্থের সঙ্গে অসমের ভাগাবাজার জামে মসজিদের গ্রন্থাগারে শোভিত হচ্ছে শ্যাম দুয়া সম্পাদিত অটলবিহারী বাজপেয়ী-ও। বাদ যায়নি জিসু খ্রিস্টের জীবনীগ্রন্থও।

বড়সড় রিডিং রুম। নিয়মিত পাঠক। বই বাইরে নিয়ে যাওয়ার কড়া নিষেধাজ্ঞা। এমন গ্রন্থাগার দক্ষিণ অসমের কোনও মসজিদে নেই। এর ওপর মনুসংহিতা বা বিবেকানন্দের নানা লেখা মসজিদে পড়ানোর কথা আর কেউ ভাবতেই পারেন না।

১৯৪৮ সালে ভাগাবাজার জামে মসজিদের প্রতিষ্ঠা। ৯৭-এ বড় ধরনের সংস্কার হয়। তখনই সচিবের দায়িত্ব নেন স্থানীয় এমসিডি কলেজের ইংরেজির শিক্ষক সাবির আহমেদ চৌধুরী। তিনিই মসজিদে গ্রন্থাগার তৈরির উদ্যোগ নেন। সঙ্গে সমস্ত ধর্ম সম্পর্কে জ্ঞান আহরণের ব্যবস্থা করেন।

এই ধরনের প্রায় সব কাজেই শুরুতে প্রতিরোধের মুখে পড়তে হয়। সাবিরবাবুর অভিজ্ঞতা ভিন্ন। তিনি জানান, গ্রন্থাগারের রূপদানের আগে থেকেই মসজিদে সমস্ত ধর্ম সম্পর্কে জানার ব্যাপারে কথাবার্তা বলতে শুরু করি। এমনকী, মসজিদের প্রথম হাফিজ আব্দুস সালামের স্মৃতিতে তাঁর পরিবার ৪০ হাজার টাকা দিতে রাজি হলে কী ধরনের বই কেনা হবে, তা স্পষ্ট করে জানিয়ে দেওয়া হয়। কোনও আপত্তি ওঠেনি।

শুধু কি আর সাজিয়ে রাখা। নিয়মিত পাঠকরা এসে তফসির ইরনে কাসির, তফসিরে জালালাইন, মারেফুল কোরানের সঙ্গে রিডিং রুমে বসে কেউ বেদের তৃতীয় খণ্ড পড়েন, কেউ উল্টান দ্য বাইবেল, দ্য কোরান অ্যান্ড সায়েন্সের পাতা।

তা দেখে বিজেপি নেতা, রাজ্য মন্ত্রিসভার সদস্য পরিমল শুক্লবৈদ্য গ্রন্থাগারের ভিজিটরস বুকে লিখে এসেছেন, জীবনের কিছু ভালো উপলব্ধির মধ্যে আরও একটা স্মৃতি যোগ হয়ে গেল।

Many a times it is opined that ‘religion is the reason, the world is breaking now into pieces.’ However, such a stereotype notion got a big jolt when series of Vedas, Upanishads found it’s place along with Islamic religious literature inside the library of a Mosque. Books on Ramakrishna Paramhangsha, Sister Nivedita, Dalai Lama, Jesus Christ, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and many other such books were also on display in the library of Jame Masjid at Bhagabajar within Cachar district.

The mosque built in 1948 underwent radical change in 1997. It was then that the responsibility of Secretary of the Mosque was shouldered by Sabir Ahmed Choudhury, who teaches English at M.C.D. College, Sonai. It was he who took the pains of building up a library and reading room within the Mosque premises.

With a spacious reading room, the Mosque can take pride in the fact that it attracts a large number of readers. The readers are, however, not allowed to take the books outside. It is probably the only Mosque in South Assam which can take the pride of housing texts from religions other than Islam.

Sabir Ahmed Choudhury expressed the view that the decision to house books from other religion is to allow the leaders to have a holistic view of all the religions whose kernel message is peace, love and brotherhood. BJP Minister Parimal Suklabaidya was so elated to see this library that in the visitor’s book he wrote “After visiting the library of this Mosque a new chapter has been added in the book of positive encounters of my life.”

Well, perhaps in this unique attempt, we can have a glimpse of the religious discourse which Akbar used to have at Ibadat Khana inside the Fatehpur Sikri.
