Use of Covid vaccine Corbevax reccomended among kids aged 5-12 Years by Govt panel

April 21: With Covid-19 cases rising in some parts of India, “The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) on Covid-19 of the CDSCO which deliberated on Biological E’s EUA application has recommended granting emergency use authorisation for use of Corbevax in the age group of five to 11 years.”

The recommendations have now been sent to the Drug Controller General (DCGI) of India by the SEC. A nod by the DCGI is now awaited before the Union Health Ministry gives a final go-ahead. Corbevax is currently being administered to children in the age group 12-14 years. Corbevax is India’s first indigenously developed Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) Protein sub-unit vaccine against coronavirus.

If approved by DCGI, Biological E’s Corbevax will become the first Covid-19 vaccine candidate that could be likely administered for children aged above 5 years.  Significantly, India is administering only Corbevax to the 12-14 years age group: 2,53,87,677 have been given the first dose, and, 12,47,298 are fully vaccinated.
