The water level of Barak at Annapurna Ghat is rising by 4 cm per hour
Aug. 6: Due to continuous monsoon rain in the catchment area of Tuirial Hydro Power Station located at Saipum, Kolasib District of Mizoram coupled with heavy rainfall yesterday, the water level in the reservoir has already reached 87.26 m at 10 am today i.e. 6 August, 2022 and is in rising trend @4cm per hour. On raising water level above 88.5 m i.e. on reaching within 2 m of FRL (Full Reservoir Level) of 90.5 m, project will release excess incoming water through opening of Spillway Gates for safety of dam as well as to limit the rise of water level within safe limit. This was stated in a letter issued by NEEPCO Mizoram to the Deputy Commissioners of Cachar and Kolasib on 6 August.
The letter addressed to the DC’s of Cachar & Kolasib by NEEPCO Mizoram further stated, ” Information for release of water will be shared 3-4 hours before opening of gates through telecommunication. You are requested to aware the people in this regard and asked them not to venture in the vicinity of the river for safety. Following official may be contacted in this regard. 1. On receiving this communication, ADC cum CEO of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar on the same day (6 August) issued a letter to the Circle Officer, Sonai. In the said letter, DDMA Cachar on the basis of the letter by NEEPCO Mizoram asked the CIrcle Officer Sonai to alert the PRI Members/ others of the villages that might get affected through the concerned Block Development Officer. Information of release of water will be shared 3-4 hours before opening of gates & thereon immediate steps will have to be taken to vacate the vulnerable villages. Therefore; you are requested to aware the people in this regard and ask them not to venture in the vicinity of the river for safety. This is for your information & necessary action.”
It is in this backdrop that the Circle Officer, Sonai, wrote a letter immediately to the Block Development Officers (BDO’s) of Sonai, Narsingpur, Palonghat, Silchar and Baskandi on 6 August. In that letter, the Circle Officer wrote, “With reference to the subject cited above & in enclosing herewith a copy of Addl. Deputy Commissioner cum CEO, DDMA, Cachar, you are requested to take necessary steps to aware the inhabitants residing near the rivers within the jurisdiction of your Blocks through your G.P. Secretaries & PRI Members/ Others as an early warning to minimise damages of life and property etc. if so and to do necessary preparedness for the same. Please treat the matter with utmost importance.”
Meanwhile, on 6 August, from 2 PM to 10 PM (8 hours), water level of River Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar has also increased considerably. In 8 hours, the water level has increased by 35 cm. Though River Barak at Annapurna Ghat was flowing much below its danger level of 19.83 mts and was recorded at 16.17 mts at 10 PM, yet the DDMA, Cachar has put on alert the concerned departmental officials. The water level of Barak was rising by 4 cm per hour. However, the authorities has asked the public not to panic as the situation is under control.
