Tuesday: A day of worry for Assam; 42 new COVID-19 cases recorded in 24 hours
May 19: As people stranded outside the state started to pour in, the number of coronavirus cases has been on the rise in Assam. It is quite obvious when people from the hotspots are travelling back to their home states, there will definitely be a spike in the number of positive cases. 19 May was indeed a day of worry for Assam as 42 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in the state within a span of 24 hours, the highest single day rise so far.
The total number of COVID-19 positive cases in the state was 115 on 18 May. But on 19 May, the numbers went on increasing almost the whole day. All eyes seemed to be on the twitter page of State Health Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. Here is the complete list of those who tested positive on Tuesday.
- May 19, 11.05 AM: Six positive cases
- May 19, 11.55 AM: Fourteen positive cases
- May 19, 06.35 PM: Six new cases
- May 19, 07.45 PM: Thirteen new cases
- May 19, 11.00 PM: Three new cases
The 42 persons who tested positive on Tuesday were from the following places:
- Jorhat: 02
- Golaghat: 02
- Kikhrajhar: 01
- Nagaon: 02
- Kamrup: 07
- Hojai: 02
- Biswanath: 02
- Nalbari: 02
- Guwahati: 03
- Karimganj: 02 (but were in quarantine at Silchar)
- Sarusajai: 17 (Quarantine centre in Guwahati)
With the addition of 42 new cases, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Assam went upto 157. Out of this, 41 persons were already discharged, 4 of them died, while 2 were migrated. That means, at present, there are 110 active cases in Assam. As the numbers were soaring up, State Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma in his tweets issued advisories for the people of the state. He tweeted, “In view of the rising number I earnestly request you to #StayAtHome and follow #SocialDistancing & hygiene norms.” In another tweet, the minister tweeted, “I request all to maintain #SocialDistanacing, must wear masks, and wash your hands frequently.”
