Trafficking of illicit drugs: All vehicles entering into Assam from Mizoram to be thoroughly checked

July 30: The cold blooded killing of 6 Assam Police personnel by Mizoram forces in a firing by LMG that lasted for 32-minutes has been regarded as a black spot on the face of civilised human existence. Assam had already crippled the drugs racket which operated from Myanmar via Mizoram and used to pass through Assam by adopting a war against narcotics. All illegal trades are done via Mizoram through this route. This was a major cause in the violent incident which occured last Monday in which Mizo forces along with Mizo goons showered bullets upon the unprovoked police and public of Assam at Lailapur in Assam- Mizoram border. This has now resulted in more stringent checking of vehicles entering into Assam from Mizoram.

Issuing an order to this effect on 29 July, 2021, MS Manivannan, Commissioner & Secretary to the Government of Assam stated that Assam Police have undertaken intensive drive against illicit drugs in the State of Assam; And whereas, within a short span of two months, 912 cases have been registered, 1560 persons arrested and huge quantities of illicit drugs, including 20.678 kgs of Heroin, 15 kgs of Opium and 1.9 kgs of Morphine, confiscated. During the drive against illicit drugs, it has been observed that most of the drugs were routed through Assam via Mizoram from across the border; And whereas, this trafficking of illicit drugs via Mizoram causes a great concern and threat to the society in general.

It is in this context that Assam Government passed an order on 29 July which specified that, “In order to check trafficking of illicit drugs, it is felt necessary to check all vehicles entering into Assam from Mizoram. Such vehicles will be thoroughly checked by personnel of Assam Police at the point of entry at all Assam- Mizoram borders. These vehicles shall be released only after due satisfaction of an officer, not below the rank of Sub Inspector of Police, that no illicit drugs are carried in the vehicles.”
